Paging Dr. Gupta...for surgeon general?

Happy 2009 from It's All Good!

Was anyone else surprised to see that CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta is being tapped by the Obama team to potentially be the U.S. Surgeon General?

What's gotta be on a person's resume to get that job? Apparently being a 39-year-old ex-neurosurgeon and journalist who's done some White House advising is enough.

In a post known to lack a lot of authority, maybe it's good. With healthcare on a lot of people's minds, especially with Obama moving into the White House, I think the appointment of a well-known, down-to-earth-seeming guy for a big health job will get people looking in that direction.

On the other hand, does the dude know what he's doing? He's young. He doesn't exactly have a lot of health policy experience. He's got a good personality and a cute face, but some of his health reporting is less than stellar (be it his fault or the fault of constraints from his producers, network or the state of journalism in general). Is he going to be able to be "the nation's doctor," as the surgeon general has been called?

Maybe. Look at our exciting president-to-be, who lacks age and experience compared to many politicians. But we're taking a chance and, as a nation, seem to be pretty hopeful about it. Might as well extend that hope to other young, new faces that are far from the status quo.

Congrats, Dr. Gupta -- now make us proud.
